Colorful Coping: How Interactive Art Can Transform Your Youth Space
What if the walls of your organization could do more than decorate—what if they could educate, engage, and even empower? At Foundation for Youth, we’ve been reimagining what a space can do for the kids who walk through it. The result? A vibrant, interactive art experience that helps children connect with their emotions, learn healthy coping strategies, and most importantly—feel seen and supported.
This isn’t just a mural. It’s a multi-wall journey built to spark curiosity, conversation, and calm. Here’s a closer look at the intentional design choices behind each wall—and how something similar could elevate your own kid-centered space.
🌈 The Hallway Wall: A Visual Playground for the Mind
This wall might be my favorite—because it does so much. On the right side, a bold maze invites kids to follow its path, subtly reinforcing focus and problem-solving. On the left, a seek-and-find game is built right into the scene. Tucked behind a little girl are hidden images that match the buttons on her shirt, and a magnifying glass beckons young viewers to search them out. It's a fun, quiet moment of attention-building and discovery.
Front and center, two birds carry calming mantras:
“Breathe in Blue” and “Breathe out Orange.”
These color-coded cues teach a simple breathing technique in a way that's both soothing and memorable. The birds also visually connect the two interactive sides of the mural, guiding the viewer’s gaze and breath through the scene.

The Lobby Wall: Everyday Encouragement, Without the Cliché
In the lobby, we wanted a message that felt authentic—not overly polished or preachy. So we chose something simple and familiar: “It’s all good.” It’s the kind of phrase kids say naturally, and it helps ground them in reassurance without feeling forced.
Floating clouds—pulled in from other mural designs—make the message feel light, airy, and cohesive with the rest of the space. The vibe here is relaxed, welcoming, and gently uplifting—just what a first impression should be.

The Drinking Fountain Wall: Breathing Techniques Come to Life
This long, often overlooked wall became the perfect spot for a moment of visual learning. Inspired by one of the program’s breathing techniques, I illustrated “birthday candle breath” using playful, numbered candles. Kids can follow the candles with their eyes and learn the calming technique in a way that’s instantly accessible.
This wall doesn’t explain—but it shows. And those gentle nudges can make all the difference for a child learning how to self-regulate in the moment.

The Grand Finale Wall: From Grayscale to Full Color
This final wall tells a powerful story of transformation. Children depicted on the interior walls are in grayscale—but outside, they bloom into full color. The contrast is intentional. It represents how using coping tools and expressing emotions can bring kids back to life, helping them feel fully present and empowered.
There’s a mason jar full of stars—a nod to Foundation for Youth’s star mascot—and a continuation of the black-and-white stripes that tie the mural series together. Clouds float through here, too, creating a visual through-line across the entire building.
But the best part?
The bottom half of this wall is a collaborative paint splatter zone—a place where the kids themselves get to leave their mark. Their splatters will form the underpainting of the final design, making them co-creators in the space they inhabit every day.
